Career Pharmacy Education in Papua New Guinea

To pursue a career in pharmacy in Papua New Guinea (PNG), individuals must complete a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree offered by the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG). This program provides comprehensive training in pharmaceutical sciences, clinical practice, and professional ethics.  

Graduates must complete an internship and register with the Pharmacy Board of Papua New Guinea to practice as licensed pharmacists. This pathway ensures that pharmacists are equipped to meet the demands of healthcare systems and adhere to international standards. 

Resources for Students

Pharmacy students are an integral part of the growth and advancement of the pharmacy profession in Papua New Guinea. PSPNG provides several resources to support pharmacy students throughout their academic and professional journey. 

The PSPNG, in partnership with CPL Group, will establish a Grant Sponsorship Program for pharmacy students in years 3 through 5, commencing in 2025. This initiative will support eligible pharmacy students with financial assistance to further their education and professional development. The program will be aimed at students who show outstanding academic achievement and a commitment to pursuing a career in pharmacy. 

Details on how to apply for the grant, including eligibility criteria and the application process, will be provided in the coming year. Students are encouraged to stay connected with PSPNG for updates on this exciting opportunity. (Application will be made online via this website)

Pharmacy Career Pathways

Make a difference in diverse roles across multiple sectors within the field of pharmacy, including: 

  • Provide medication management and clinical services within hospital settings.
  • Work collaboratively with healthcare teams to ensure safe and effective patient care.
  • Dispense medicines, offer health advice, and counsel patients on the proper use of medications.
  • Promote health and wellness in community settings.
  • Participate in medicine production, quality control, and marketing.
  • Engage in pharmaceutical research and innovation to improve healthcare solutions.
  • Contribute to medicine regulation, quality assurance, and compliance under government bodies such as National Department of Health (NDoH), Pharmaceutical Service Standard Branch.
  • Ensure the registration, distribution, and proper use of medicines across PNG.
  • Support health initiatives and programs led by international and local NGOs.
  • Focus on supply chain management, medicine accessibility, and patient care in disease-specific programs (e.g., malaria, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis).
  • Work within national and international programs addressing major public health challenges.
  • Ensure proper procurement, storage, and distribution of medicines critical for disease management.
  • Collaborate on healthcare policies to improve medicine access, rational drug use, and public health outcomes.
  • Teach and mentor future pharmacists or engage in research to advance pharmaceutical science and healthcare practices.
  • Ensure the registration, distribution, and proper use of medicines across PNG.
